Brief History:

Spencer grew up as a part of a highly competitive family. That bred her into a very competitive and overachieving person, herself. She strives to beat her older sister, Melissa, at anything she can, but since Melissa is perceived to be 'perfect' it seems like anything Spencer does, falls short.

It wasn't until Alison DiLaurentis handpicked Spencer along with three other girls that her life really started to change. The five of them (Ali, Spencer, Hanna, Aria and Emily) became the best of friends, doing everything together. Behind the school's Queen Bee, they quickly became the most popular girls at Rosewood High.

Though as their friendship progressed, things became strained. Alison had a way of getting the girls to tell her all of their secrets, yet she never shared anything with them in return. Not only that, but she would also tease them about their secrets in front of everyone else. Not that anyone else knew what she was talking about. Spencer's biggest secret was that she had kissed Ian Thomas, her older sister's boyfriend. Alison often threatened to tell Melissa about the kiss if Spencer didn't.

One night, at the beginning of tenth grade, the girls got together in Spencer's family's barn for a sleepover. After getting into an argument with Spencer, Alison left. When Spencer heard a scream, she went out to find Alison, but she was gone. Spencer returned to the barn to report to the other girls, who were just waking up.

When it became apparent that Alison had disappeared, the girls started to drift apart. Spencer focused on her sophomore year, determined to stay in the running for valedictorian and focused on her many activities--newspaper, yearbook, student council, field hockey and tennis. Over the summer between her sophomore and junior years, she began renovations on the family's barn with the agreement that she could live there her last two years of high school. On top of that, she held an internship with the mayor. While she never talked to Aria--who moved away--or Emily anymore, Spencer and Hanna remained in slight contact, both too busy to be close.

Spencer's project on the barn proved to be all for nothing when her sister Melissa announced that she would be moving in with her fiancè, Wren, while renovations were being done on her Philly townhouse. Spencer wasn't too surprised, but found herself disappointed by this news. The only perk was that she found herself attracted to Wren, who wasn't as bad as some of Melissa's other boyfriends.

As Spencer got to know Wren more and the tension between them became undeniable, she began receiving mysterious texts from "A", saying that Spencer liked going after her sister's boyfriends, hinting that they knew about Ian. Spencer originally assumed that "A" was Ali, but after her body was found in the DiLaurentis family's old backyard, that theory blew up.

At the funeral, Spencer found out that all four of them were getting messages from "A" and after the funeral, they all received another text, proving further that Alison couldn't have been involved.

The year progressed with the girls still getting messages. Some were taunting about their secrets--new and old, some were threatening and some even hinted at who Ali's killer might be--though most of them have been misleads. At times, it's unclear as to whether A is trying to help them or trying to harm them as the person seems to be doing both in various ways.
